Peer Counseling (One-on-One)

SCIL Staff offer peer counseling one-on-one to individuals with disabilities to provide mutual support, information, assistance, and understanding. This can help facilitate good decision making because Peer Counselors can assist in dealing with problem solving and related issues by offering support and direction where it’s needed.

Peer Counselors are people with disabilities who have experience advocating for themselves and others. They provide guidance and assist consumers with creating a ‘plan for living’ (developing a goal plan).

SCIL provides peer support in a consumer directed manner over the telephone, in person at the center, or by visiting the consumer at his or her home.

SCIL staff and volunteers have been trained in the philosophies and practices of independent living and communicate independent living strategies to consumers in peer support interactions.
